Horizon Forbidden West Surpasses 8.4 Million Copies Sold on PS5 and PS4

Horizon Forbidden West has achieved impressive sales of 8.4 million copies as of April 16. In a PlayStation blog post commemorating the 20th anniversary of Guerrilla Games, studio director Jan-Bart van Beek announced that the Horizon franchise has sold a total of 32.7 million units. Van Beek expressed gratitude for the support and revealed that many players have discovered Horizon through PlayStation’s subscription services and initiatives such as PlayStation Plus and Play at Home. However, Forbidden West has a ways to go before surpassing the sales numbers of its predecessor, Horizon Zero Dawn. Last year, Guerrilla revealed that the first game in the series sold 20 million copies on both PS4 and PC.

“We are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming reception from the community and the ongoing love and support for the franchise. As Guerrillas, we feel privileged to witness this support, as we engage with fanart and cosplay from the community. Your enthusiasm continues to astound us,” added Van Beek. He further assured fans that Aloy’s adventures will continue in a sequel, with the ending of Forbidden West leaving the door open for future storylines. The game recently received a paid expansion called Burning Shores, which transformed Los Angeles into a volcanic archipelago. It is important to note that the aforementioned sales figure of 32.7 million includes the mainline game launches on both PS4 and PS5, The Frozen Wilds DLC for the first game, the Burning Shores DLC, Horizon: Call of the Mountain on PS VR2, and the PC release of Horizon Zero Dawn.

The Horizon universe is expanding further with a Netflix series led by Steve Blackman, best known for his work on The Umbrella Academy. The series appears to draw heavily from the origin story of huntress Aloy, chronicling her journey from being an outcast in her tribe to becoming a hero who saves mankind from a dystopian threat. Michelle Lovretta, known for Killjoys, is collaborating with Blackman on the script. This adaptation adds to PlayStation’s growing portfolio of screen adaptations, which includes a God of War series for Amazon Prime Video.

A report from October indicated that Horizon Zero Dawn is being remastered for the PS5, promising enhancements such as improved lighting, overhauled textures, and better animations. Sony has previously released remakes and remasters for its popular first-party games, sparking controversy. They recently brought The Last of Us Part I to PS5 and later ported it to PC, despite the game already having a remastered version for PS4. Considering Horizon Zero Dawn’s enduring visual appeal, it shouldn’t be surprising to see the possibility of native 4K support on PS5 with a modest $10 (about Rs. 820) upgrade. However, based on their history of monetizing The Last of Us, it wouldn’t be unexpected for Horizon Zero Dawn to be re-released with a steep price tag of $70 (about Rs. 5,743) on the PS5.

Horizon Forbidden West is currently available on both PS4 and PS5.
