How Toyota’s Mega Cruiser Went Toe-To-Toe With Hummer

The Mega Cruiser, with its imposing dimensions and unique rear-wheel steering, offers similar features to AM General’s SUV. It boasts an engine positioned far back in the chassis, portal axles for exceptional ground clearance, an onboard tire inflation/deflation system, and full-time all-wheel drive.

To accommodate its remarkable ground clearance, the Mega Cruiser cleverly places its drivetrain high into the passenger compartment. This design decision results in a significant transmission tunnel that separates the occupants. However, unlike the Hummer, the Mega Cruiser’s transmission hump does not extend to the rear seat area, allowing for a spacious four-across bench seat.

Beneath the Mega Cruiser’s expansive hood lies a fascinating choice of engine: a 4.1-liter four-cylinder turbocharged diesel. While it may seem large for a four-cylinder, it remains significantly underpowered for such a massive and heavy vehicle. It produces 153 horsepower and 282 pound-feet of torque, which pales in comparison to its size.

Just how underpowered is it? According to Road & Track, this mega machine takes an agonizing 20.6 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 MPH. In a recent test in the Colorado Rockies at high altitude, a Mega Cruiser could only reach a top speed of 50 MPH with the throttle fully open, failing to hit the 60 MPH mark.

However, the compact diesel engine manages to achieve a decent fuel efficiency of 13 MPG in combined highway and city driving. Considering the monstrous size and weight of this vehicle, it’s not exactly on par with a Prius but still reasonable.
