SHENZHEN, China – Huawei Technologies’ handset business is poised for a strong resurgence, according to Richard Yu, the head of the company’s consumer business. Speaking at Huawei’s annual developer conference in the city of Dongguan, Yu revealed that Huawei’s share of the domestic smartphone market had grown by 76.1% in the second quarter, securing second place in the high-end sector.

In the overall Chinese market, Huawei holds 11.3% of the market share, ranking behind Vivo and Apple, according to Counterpoint Research. The growth in Huawei’s market share is attributed to the resolution of product shortages and the resumption of normal product launches after several rounds of U.S. restrictions on U.S.-made technology limited the company’s production of last-generation 4G handsets.

Despite being labeled a security risk by the U.S. and European governments, Huawei has persevered, with Yu emphasizing the success of the company’s in-house Harmony operating system, which has attracted 2.2 million developers over four years. Research firms anticipate that Huawei will resume the production of 5G smartphones by the end of the year by sourcing chips domestically, bypassing the U.S. restrictions.
