The utilization of smart meters is rapidly gaining popularity in the country, driven by the government’s initiative to ensure widespread adoption. This push towards smart meters is an integral part of the government’s endeavors to modernize the country’s energy infrastructure and align it with global standards.

The implementation of smart meters will contribute to enhanced efficiency, reduced waste, and improved energy supply. Indraprastha Gas, a prominent gas distribution company in India, has garnered attention due to several state governments awarding contracts for smart meter installation.

Genesis Gas Solutions, a subsidiary of ONGC’s Vikas Lifecare, has partnered with IGL to establish India’s first Integrated Smart Meter Manufacturing Plant. As per the company’s exchange filing, this new plant will require an investment of Rs 1,100 million. The anticipated operational date is April of next year, with an initial capacity of manufacturing 1 million meters annually.

This cutting-edge manufacturing plant in India will produce Diaphragm Gas Meters equipped with IoT technologies such as LoRa, LoRaWAN, and Bluetooth, ensuring accurate energy demand management and metering solutions for consumers.

IGL aims to produce 10 lakh smart meters in the future, thereby not only supporting the government’s Make In India initiative but also significantly reducing imports. Currently, the gas metering solutions market in the country is dominated by overseas suppliers. By encouraging domestic manufacturing, the government envisions a revolutionary transformation in the field of Smart Metering technology in India, taking a step forward towards self-reliant India (AtmaNirbhar Bharat).

The Modi government has reaffirmed its commitment to green energy by proposing various initiatives in recent years. In this year’s budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman allocated Rs 35,000 crore for diverse energy transition initiatives.
