The Philippines falls behind its Southeast Asian neighbors in terms of internet connection stability, according to the Pulse Internet Resilience Index (IRI).
The IRI report, produced by the Internet Society, a global internet advocacy group, highlights that the Philippines ranks 7th on the list with a score of 46 percent.
This index, which covers 170 countries, evaluates the availability of internet infrastructure, network performance, service providers’ ability to offer stable connections, and the affordability of internet packages.
“A resilient internet connection is one that maintains an acceptable level of service despite faults and challenges, and it is increasingly a focus for policymakers and activists worldwide as internet infrastructure becomes essential for a nation’s economy and society,” stated the Internet Society.
Among the Southeast Asian countries, Singapore leads with the highest score of 72 percent, followed by Vietnam with 52 percent. Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, and Thailand all scored 51 percent, while Indonesia scored 48 percent. The Philippines ranked below Myanmar (45 percent), Cambodia (43 percent), Lao PDR (42 percent), and Timor-Leste (38 percent).
The report also revealed that the mobile segment in the Philippines scored only 29 percent in terms of performance, significantly lower than the 76 percent registered by fixed networks. The Internet Society sees this as an opportunity to improve mobile connectivity, given its high penetration rate.
The report also acknowledged the “good competition” in the local internet service market in the Philippines, with primary players such as PLDT Inc., Globe Telecom, and Converge ICT Solutions Inc.
