India imposes import restriction on laptop and tablets; electronic manufacturing experts praise the move

In a pioneering move to stimulate domestic electronics manufacturing, the Government of India has recently implemented strict regulations on the import of laptops, tablets, and personal computers falling under HSN 8741 category. According to the government notification, these restricted items can only be imported with a valid license.

Praising the government’s initiative, Hari Om Rai, Chairman and Co-founder of Lava International, describes it as a “game-changing move” that will benefit both the industry and consumers.

Rai, in his statement to ANI, emphasizes the significance of this restriction in promoting electronics manufacturing within India. He commends the government’s strategic approach in maintaining a smooth supply chain and ensuring the availability of laptops and tablets to consumers.

According to Rai, “The import restriction on laptops and tablets is truly a visionary move by the Government of India. It is a significant step towards establishing India as a global hub for electronics manufacturing. The government has taken measures to prevent any disruption in the supply chain and ensure the welfare of consumers.”

Rai believes that India will witness a surge in job creation and the development of a robust component ecosystem, ultimately transforming into a major electronics manufacturing hub. “This demonstrates that a new India is actively working for the benefit of its industry, consumers, and citizens. The electronics industry warmly welcomes this move by the Government of India,” adds Rai.

Industry experts and analysts predict that these import restrictions will encourage local businesses and entrepreneurs to invest in research, development, and manufacturing capabilities. This will decrease dependence on foreign markets and promote the growth of the Indian electronics sector.

Likewise, Sunil Vachani, Founder and Chairman of Dixon Technologies, hails this decision as a “landmark” move.

Vachani believes that this move will generate significant employment opportunities in India and lead to the establishment of new factories to meet industry demands.

“Restricting the import of IT hardware is a landmark decision. This will position India as one of the largest manufacturing hubs for IT products globally. I foresee a time when Indian manufacturers and the country as a whole will cater to the global demand for IT hardware products. This will result in massive employment opportunities and the establishment of new factories,” expresses Vachani in an interview with ANI.
