India vs Australia: Alyssa Healy and Phoebe Litchfield put up highest-ever opening partnership against India in ODIs

Australian batters Alyssa Healy and Phoebe Litchfield registered the highest-ever opening partnership against India women in the ODIs during the 3rd match at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Australia had claimed an unassailable 2-0 lead in the 3-match ODI series against India. The visitors beat the hosts by 6 wickets in the 1st ODI, followed by a close 3-run win in the 2nd match.

In the 3rd ODI, Australia opted to bat first and got off to a flying start as Litchfield and Healy shared an 189-run stand between them from 173 balls. This is the highest-ever opening partnership against India women in this format. The duo broke the record set by Alex Blackwell and Meg Lanning, when they put up a stand of 180 at the Wankhede Stadium in 2012.

The Indian bowlers struggled to get the breakthrough as the pair kept the scoreboard ticking. Australia’s captain Healy, who was dismissed in the 1st ODI for a duck, finally notched up an ODI fifty after eight innings. The two batters continued to score runs for Australia, taking the game away from India’s hands.

Pooja Vastrakar provided India with the much-needed breakthrough as she dismissed Healy for 82 in the 29th over. This wicket opened the gates for a flurry of wickets as Australia was reduced from 189 for 0 to 216 for 4. Phoebe held on to one end as wickets kept tumbling on the other.

Phoebe, who turned out to be a revelation for the Australian team in the series, notched up her ODI hundred in the 37th over. She had scored consecutive fifties for Australia in the 1st and 2nd ODI and now converted her good start into a big hundred. Australia hammered 338 runs in the 1st innings, which is their highest-ever total against India in the white-ball format.

India came into the ODI series after registering their maiden Test match win against Australia. India have lost 9 consecutive matches to the visitors in the ODI format and would look to avoid a clean-sweep against Australia. The last time India beat Australia at home in ODIs was back in 2007 in Chennai.
