Gurjit Singh, a 28-year-old Indian-origin man from Punjab, was found murdered outside his home in Dunedin, New Zealand. A 33-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with Singh’s murder.
Gurjit’s father, Nishan Singh, had sold his village land in Punjab, to send him to New Zealand, according to Star News.
The 28-year-old from Ludhiana was working as a technician with the telecom company Chorus.
The 33-year-old suspect, whose details haven’t been shared yet, is set to appear in the Dunedin District Court, facing charges related to Singh’s death.
The 28-year-old was found dead last week and his body was found outside his Pine Hill home. There was blood and shattered glass all around.
Post-mortem results showed that Gurjit Singh succumbed to multiple stab wounds inflicted by a sharp object at his residence on Hillary Street, reported NZHerald.
“He (Singh) was excited about his wife coming (to New Zealand) and wanted to show her around, taking her to places like Queenstown,” a friend of Singh told StarNews.
Singh’s father, Nishan Singh, who reached Dunedin on Monday, said the police had done a good job in arresting the suspect.
However, he said he wouldn’t be satisfied until justice was done.
Singh’s father received support from both the police and the local Punjabi community during this investigation, reported StarNews. The Otago Punjabi Foundation Trust has set up a ‘Givealittle page’ to support Singh’s family as he was the only earner in the household.
“No parent should lose a son,” Nishan Singh told the Star News.
Those close to Singh said he was a “good guy” without any enemies or issues.
Gurjit Singh seemed worried, fearing a break-in at his place, which is clear as he bought security cameras to protect his home, reported NZ Herald.
“A team of 25 investigators are interviewing and speaking with family, friends and work colleagues of the victim, to try and establish his movements before his death,” said Detective Croudis, said Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, addressing Pine Hill residents.
The additional enquiry involves several vehicles, another residential property and workplaces associated with the suspect. The investigation will include Singh’s family, friends and work colleagues, aiming to piece together his movements before the fatal incident.
The hours invested by the ESR team, both at the scene and in the laboratory, have been instrumental in supporting the police investigation, said Detective Croudis.
Otago Punjabi Foundation Trust member Narindervir Singh, who had spoken with Gurjit Singh’s father on the day of his death, described the situation as heartbreaking, according to the NZ Herald.
