Installation of solution to odor problem at Jeep plant in Detroit completed

Stellantis, the leading automotive company, has recently implemented a revolutionary solution at its Jeep plant in Detroit to address the long-standing issue of odors that have been negatively impacting nearby residents for over two years.

As part of their commitment to resolving this matter, Stellantis has successfully installed a state-of-the-art regenerative thermal oxidizer at the Mack Assembly Plant. This advanced equipment is now fully operational, complying with the consent order agreed upon with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy.

In a recent news release, Linda Trbizan, the head of North America assembly operations, announced that the new system would redirect the exhaust from two existing stacks to the thermal oxidizer. This process ensures the destruction of odor-contributing compounds, addressing the concerns of the community. Trbizan also expressed gratitude for the community’s patience throughout this extensive process.

The installation of the thermal oxidizer comes after Stellantis was issued 11 violation notices and incurred fines of over $500,000 due to air pollution at its factories in Detroit and Warren over the past two years. The company had been actively seeking higher emissions caps for both plants.

The Mack plant experienced air pollution issues shortly after its commencement of production in March 2021, and the most recent violation was issued last month regarding persistent and objectionable paint/solvent odors of moderate to strong intensity.
