Intel just made a huge comeback, and it’s bad news for AMD

Jacob Roach / Digital Trends

In recent times, the client CPU market has faced challenges. However, the latest data from Jon Peddie Research suggests that it may be rebounding, and Intel appears to be the biggest beneficiary of this trend, while AMD has experienced a decline in market share.

Overall, the PC market has been struggling, especially after the pandemic-induced surge. The state of the global economy has negatively impacted CPU and GPU sales. Intel, in particular, has faced significant challenges, reporting a historic loss of $2.8 billion in the first quarter of 2023. However, there is some positive news in terms of shipments.

Between the first and second quarter of 2023, there was a substantial increase in the number of CPU units shipped, rising from 46 million to 53.6 million, representing a 17% increase. These figures include both Intel and AMD shipments. Notably, laptops continue to dominate the market, accounting for 72% of overall CPU shipments, while desktop CPUs make up the remaining 28%. Additionally, integrated GPU shipments increased by 14%, which is not surprising considering many processors come with an integrated GPU.

In comparison to AMD, Intel experienced a quarter-to-quarter increase of 23% in CPU market share, while AMD’s share declined by 5.3%. However, when compared to the previous year, the overall picture is still bleak, with a 23% drop in total client-based processors, including a 25% drop in desktop chips and a 22% drop in laptop CPUs.

It is important to note that these numbers reflect CPU shipments and not sales. In terms of sales, AMD has achieved significant success in the German market with its Ryzen desktop CPUs, outperforming Intel. However, global sales figures are scarce and not readily available. It is widely acknowledged that AMD currently offers some of the best processors, particularly preferred by gamers.

Will Intel’s market share continue to grow? There is a possibility, but no guarantee. While AMD is not expected to release Zen 5 CPUs for another year, Intel has a rumored Raptor Lake refresh on the horizon, followed by Meteor Lake chips for laptops. Additionally, AMD will continue to expand its presence in the mobile segment with its Phoenix APUs and Dragon Range CPUs, and there may also be updates to the lower-end Ryzen desktop chips. Currently, Intel holds the lead, but the numbers at the start of 2024 will be interesting to analyze.
