It seems that Nvidia’s peace offering is failing to make an impact

Nvidia has quietly released its RTX 4060 Ti 16GB, without much fanfare or promotion. This latest GPU offering from Nvidia seems to be lagging behind its competitors, leading to limited early benchmarks.

Interestingly, MSI has taken the initiative to benchmark both the 8GB and 16GB versions of the RTX 4060 Ti. The results indicate that the new GPU may actually be slower, which could explain why Nvidia did not produce its own version of this card.

The existence of the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB has been shrouded in secrecy. Typically, GPU manufacturers send test units to reviewers prior to the official release, but Nvidia has not provided any for this model. Additionally, Nvidia did not create a Founders Edition GPU for this particular card.

While details are scarce, MSI has shared some gaming comparisons in a now-private podcast episode. However, TechPowerUp managed to capture the information before it disappeared.

Although MSI’s testing may not be comprehensive, the results currently show that the 16GB RTX 4060 Ti lags slightly behind the 8GB version in popular games such as Cyberpunk 2077, F1 2023, Rainbow 6: Siege, and Fortnite. Surprisingly, performance in Hogwarts Legacy remains similar between the two versions, despite the game being limited by the lower VRAM of the 8GB variant. One small victory for the 16GB RTX 4060 Ti is its performance in CS:GO, where it outperforms its predecessor with 445 fps compared to 419 fps.

Realistically, the RTX 4060 Ti was never intended to be a groundbreaking GPU. Its specifications mirror those of the 8GB version, with the only difference being the increased VRAM. Unfortunately, the addition of 16GB over a 128-bit bus does not significantly improve performance, especially considering that both versions have similar TGP ratings.

Considering the price difference of $100 between the two versions, it is difficult to justify purchasing the 16GB RTX 4060 Ti if it performs the same or worse across the board. It may be more sensible to opt for the RTX 4070, which offers better overall specs despite having 12GB of memory. Nvidia’s pricing strategy continues to be peculiar, and choosing a GPU in this generation remains a gamble, as higher cost does not necessarily equate to better performance.

The release of the RTX 4060 Ti with 16GB VRAM initially seemed like a compromise from Nvidia. However, it appears that simply increasing VRAM does not solve the underlying issues, as the card’s architecture needs to be optimized accordingly for any noticeable impact.
