James Gunn teases a Legendary Star-Lord solo movie

If you’re curious about Marvel’s future plans for Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord after the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, now is the time to get a digital copy. While it’s unlikely that Star-Lord will appear in future films, director James Gunn hinted at a potential solo movie for the character in the commentary track of Guardians Vol. 3’s digital release (via The Direct).

If you’ve seen Guardians Vol. 3, you’ll remember that it ended with a scene of Peter Quill (Star-Lord) having breakfast with his grandfather on Earth. After their conversation, a title card appeared on the screen, teasing the return of the Legendary Star-Lord. Thanks to the commentary track, we now know what Gunn and Pratt had in mind for the character in a solo movie. Here’s what Gunn said:

Chris and I have always talked about how intriguing it would be to have a Legendary Star-Lord movie. It would tell the story of Star-Lord trying to adapt to life on Earth, much like how someone would adapt to the alien environment of outer space. He would feel like a fish out of water in a regular environment. I can’t wait to see it.

Gunn seems to be referencing the Legendary Star-Lord comic series, which ran for 12 issues from 2014-2015. In that series, Peter Quill goes on a solo adventure, dating Kitty Pride, battling his father J’son, and encountering a reptilian alien species called the Badoon.

It’s unclear how much of this plot would have made it into a Star-Lord movie, especially now that Marvel Studios has access to the X-Men franchise. The possibilities are endless! However, it’s important to note that Gunn is currently working on building a new cinematic universe for DC. If Marvel decides to make a Legendary Star-Lord movie, they’ll need to find another director. Alternatively, they may choose to incorporate Star-Lord into one of the upcoming Avengers films. Personally, I believe a solo movie would be the better choice.

While we await more news about the Star-Lord spinoff, you can now purchase Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on digital storefronts, and it will soon be available on Disney+.
