The sixth month of the Hindu calendar, Bhadrapada, begins shortly after Rakshabandhan. Krishna Janmotsav is celebrated on the eighth day of the festival. This year, Janmashtami is on August 26. Lord Krishna, considered an avatar of Lord Vishnu in the Dwapara Yuga, is a central figure in Hindu mythology. The sacred book, Bhagavad Gita is believed to be a compilation of sermons of Lord Krishna to Arjuna just before the battle of Kurukshetra. There are many other legends surrounding Krishna, some more well known than others. Lord Krishna had a deep affection for the flute from a young age. To understand why he broke his flute, Bhopal-based astrologer and Vastu consultant Pandit Hitendra Kumar Sharma provides insight.

According to the Puranas, when Krishna was on his way to Mathura to defeat Kansa, he carried his flute with him for the entire 11 years and 56 days. He never parted from it, as playing the flute would draw his friends, including the gopis and cows, to him. Everyone was enchanted by its sound. There came a time when Krishna broke his beloved flute. To explore the reason behind this and the story connected to it, let’s delve into the details.

On his way to Mathura to defeat his uncle, the demon Kansa, he met Radharani. It is said that during their farewell, Krishna expressed that he would not be able to see Radharani again. In response, Radharani requested to meet him once more in human form before departing for Golok Dham. Krishna granted her wish. During this time, he played the flute for the last time in Vrindavan, and after bidding farewell to Radharani, Krishna stopped playing the flute altogether.

Krishna Kanhaiya may have stopped playing the flute after bidding farewell to Radharani, but he could not completely part with it. When Radharani met Lord Krishna for the last time in Dwarka, she told him that the time had come for her to leave the earth. During this meeting, Radharani requested Kanhaiya to play the flute one final time. As soon as Lord Krishna played the flute, Radharani left her body and departed for Golok Dham. Deeply saddened by this event, Lord Krishna broke his beloved flute.
