Monday saw the Princess of Wales taking to social media to extend an apology, acknowledging her involvement in altering an official portrait released by Kensington Palace. This came after major news agencies, including AFP, Reuters, and Associated Press, retracted the Mother’s Day portrait featuring a smiling Kate Middleton, casually seated in a garden chair with Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis; due to violations of their policies regarding manipulated content.
The attempt to reassure the public about Middleton’s whereabouts, amidst speculation following her recent abdominal surgery, turned into a spectacular misstep. The fallout from the photo’s release led the editor to issue an apology to the official account of the Prince and Princess of Wales by Monday morning.
“Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day. C,” it read.
In a twist nobody anticipated, the apology, signed by “C” for Catherine, Princess of Wales, suggested that Middleton herself had tinkered with the image, a departure from the meticulously-curated image of the royal family.
However, not everyone was convinced by the apology. Social media erupted with skepticism, with one user writing, “I am struggling to believe that the most famous royal family in the world – and the woman who would be queen – fiddled around with photoshop and put out a family pic (designed to quash rumours about her whereabouts) without anyone in the ranks inspecting it. Nah. Not buying it.”

Another chimed in, “Literally no one is buying this. I’m genuinely concerned for this woman’s safety and welfare.”
Memes swiftly followed, reflecting the disbelief in Kate’s case and the broader erosion of trust.
For those perplexed by the fuss, the image itself raised eyebrows. Everyone appeared to be smiling so intensely that they resembled a Snapchat filter. Middleton, seated in the centre, seemed oddly proportioned, sparking questions about the authenticity of the image. From misaligned hands to peculiar details like a lighter zip on Middleton’s attire, the discrepancies were glaring.
The manipulations were so blatant that even Britain’s Press Association withdrew the image, citing a lack of clarification from Kensington Palace. In response, the palace hastily issued a statement, attempting to quell the mounting concerns.
