Kerala Incident: Previously circulated video of cars driving over Indian flag resurfaces

A viral video showing cars driving over an Indian Tricolour flag fixed to the ground has caught the attention of social media users. What makes it more interesting is that a group of people carrying the Pakistani flag can be seen cheering on. Initially claimed to be shot in Kerala, the video has been circulating on various platforms for about a year, with different users sharing it with the same claim. Even on Facebook, the video has been widely shared. Interestingly, this video was previously circulated with claims that it was shot in Tamil Nadu.

To get to the bottom of this, a fact check was conducted. By conducting a reverse image search on one of the key frames of the video, a tweet was found from March 10, 2020, claiming that the video was from Pakistan. The tweet expressed disgust towards the disrespect shown towards the Indian flag during a Pakistani parade.

Taking a closer look at the video, a hoarding with the name ‘Sanam’ can be seen in one of the frames. A Google search led to the discovery of a store named Sanam Boutique in Karachi, Pakistan. Comparing the Google street view of the store with a frame from the viral video confirmed that the locations match.

Further investigation revealed a white vehicle with the text ‘PTCL’ written on it in green. PTCL, the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd., is the national telecommunication company in Pakistan, and the logo matches the text seen on the vehicle.

In a longer version of the viral video, another vehicle with ‘The Hunar Foundation’ written on it can be seen passing by. The Hunar Foundation is an organization in Karachi that provides vocational training to young adults. Their address listed on Google further strengthens the evidence that the video was indeed shot in Karachi.

Therefore, it is clear that this viral video, which dates back to at least 2020, is originally from Pakistan and not Kerala or Tamil Nadu as previously claimed. It serves as a reminder to be cautious when consuming and sharing content on social media.
