Game of Thrones veteran Liam Cunningham delves into his role as the ruthless spymaster, Thomas Wade, in Netflix’s upcoming series, 3 Body Problem.

Details on the highly anticipated Netflix adaptation of Liu Cixin’s bestselling Science Fiction novel, 3 Body Problem, have been few and far between. However, fans have been eagerly dissecting every frame of the teaser trailer released by the streaming platform earlier this summer. Now, Liam Cunningham, known for his role in Game of Thrones, has opened up about his portrayal of a key character from the book series in the upcoming show.

In an exclusive interview with Variety, Cunningham sheds light on his character Thomas Wade, a significant figure from the third book of the 3 Body Problem trilogy, Death’s End.

Describing Wade, Cunningham says, “He’s an extraordinary individual. It’s been quite some time since I’ve portrayed a character as complex as this. Ironically, it’s vastly different from the role I played in Game of Thrones as Seaworth, who was seen as a moral compass. Wade is a shock to those who associate me with one type of character. He’s quite the handful, and his involvement in the intelligence community is grounded in theoretical physics and quantum entanglement. However, there are other non-scientific individuals he encounters at the start of the show.”

Notably absent from the first two books, Wade assumes a pivotal role in the fight against an impending alien invasion. As a former CIA officer driven by the goal of saving humanity, he is ruthless and manipulative, employing morally questionable tactics that include an attempt to assassinate the series’ ultimate hero. One of his notable quotes from the books is, “If we lose our human nature, we lose much, but if we lose our bestial nature, we lose everything.” Revealing any more about his role would be a major spoiler.

While Wade’s appearance raises questions about whether Netflix will try to condense all three books into a single 8-episode season of 3 Body Problem, only time will tell. The series is set to premiere in 2024. Remember, simply not watching the show can contribute to its cancellation if you’re not interested.
