If you’re familiar with the franchise, you’ll know that the upcoming shooter game revolves around various heists that the game’s original crew, consisting of Dallas, Wolf, Chains, and Hoxton, must carry out. Although I have experience playing popular FPS shooters like Call of Duty, Valorant, Counter-Strike, Apex Legends, Destiny, and others, I had never played any of the Payday games before. So, I delved into the world, gameplay, and mechanics of Payday 3, hoping to discover what sets it apart from other shooters in the market. The main gameplay focus of Payday 3 revolves around bank heists, and as someone who has spent countless hours performing heists in GTA V, I was intrigued to see how Payday 3 brings a unique perspective to this type of crime.
Gameplay
I was thoroughly impressed by the gameplay options in Payday 3. Typically, heist missions in shooter games offer two approaches: stealth or guns blazing. Payday 3 offers both styles, but what sets it apart is the wide range of strategic choices available for each mission. While a bank robbery might seem straightforward, it was only when I played the No Rest for the Wicked mission that I truly grasped the intricacies of successfully pulling off a heist.
In Payday 3, you have the option to play the mission of robbing the small branch of Secure Capital Bank alone, with AI-controlled squad members making up the rest of your team. However, the true beauty of Payday 3 lies in its co-op mode, where you can join forces with other players for the heist. This opens up endless possibilities, allowing players to divide tasks, provide mutual support, and coordinate their efforts, especially when confronted by waves of incoming police forces. Coordination is key in Payday 3.
There are numerous variables to consider, and as you spend more time on a heist, maintaining control becomes increasingly challenging. However, there are strategies that can help delay the inevitable chaos. One such strategy is keeping hostages, which allows for negotiations with the police and provides additional time. This extra time can be crucial for reaching the vault before the police eventually intervene.
Prior to each match, players have the opportunity to set up their loadouts, which include primary and secondary weapons, grenades, armor, and other utilities such as a spycam, ammo box, health box, and more. As players level up, they can unlock various perks that offer advantages like increased movement speed and faster reload times. Additionally, players can use the money stolen from previous heists to purchase weapons, mods, attachments, and other equipment, allowing for better preparation in future heists.
I played the same bank job mission numerous times, and with each attempt, I discovered new elements I had missed before, as well as alternative ways to complete the mission. This includes uncovering side objectives that lead to additional rewards, accessing crucial equipment that facilitates the heist, and identifying strategic lookout spots and vantage points. In summary, Payday 3 offers excellent replayability, especially when playing with a coordinated squad.
Developed using Unreal Engine 4, Payday 3 is set to be released on September 21, 2023, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Linux, and Windows PC.
