Where did the numbers stand? Contrary to exit polls that predicted a landslide for the ruling alliance, the NDA ended their run at 293, with the BJP managing to get only 240 seats this time. The Opposition’s INDIA bloc stood at 232, with the Congress doubling its 2019 tally and grabbing 99 seats. The biggest upset for the BJP was in Uttar Pradesh where it had won 62 seats in 2019 and 71 seats in 2014. The BJP’s numbers almost halved as it won just 33 seats. The BJP also faced setbacks in several states where the party dominated in 2019. Among them were Maharashtra, Haryana, Rajasthan and Karnataka. The party took a hit in West Bengal as well.

Why the TDP and JD(U) push case for Speaker’s post as insurance

The TDP and JD(U), two parties key to the third successive stint of the NDA at the Centre, have decided to press for the post of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Sources said the two parties have already indicated to the BJP leadership that the Speaker’s post should be offered to alliance partners – TDP’s GMC Balayogi was Speaker when Atal Bihari Vajpaye was heading a coalition government in the late 1990s.

This move, sources said, is to “insulate” the alliance partners from any possible split in the future. The Speaker’s role is crucial in the anti-defection law because the time and nature of the final decision is entirely a call that can be taken by the Speaker. Read More

Decoding the Verdict

How will the third Narendra Modi government differ from the two previous ones that came to power in 2014 and 2019? The answer will lie in the composition of the Eighteenth Lok Sabha. Read More to understand what the verdict means.

What was the refrain behind the verdict

If one word can sum up the outcome of the 2024 elections, it is the Hindi word, ”ankush,” (restraint) that the Indian voter has exercised — she has given the BJP the mandate to rule for a third term — but has also reined it in.

The BJP leadership will now have to rule at the head of a coalition government, take along its allies, be more mindful of its own party leaders who were given short shrift. The BJP may still dismiss concerns raised by the Opposition but it will be aware that it can’t quite get away with it – with a 60-plus dip in their tally.

In democratic politics, arithmetic also shapes chemistry and Prime Minister Narendra Modi knows that. Ever since he began contesting elections in 2001, he has never been part of a formation that’s not in majority — until now. This did have an echo on the campaign street.
