Projections and Expectations for 2024 Polls

The 2024 parliamentary polls are anticipated to be a significant contest, particularly for the opposition INDIA bloc. Opinion poll conducted by ABP-CVoter projects a commanding lead for the NDA, estimating a vote share of 45.9 per cent and approximately 366 seats in the Lok Sabha. Conversely, the INDIA bloc, which includes the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), is expected to secure a 39 per cent vote share and 156 seats.

These projections indicate a notable shift in voting patterns since the 2019 Lok Sabha results, with the BJP witnessing a positive swing of 3.08 per cent, and the INDIA bloc experiencing a rise of 2.5 per cent.

The last Lok Sabha polls were announced on March 10 and conducted in seven phases beginning April 11, with vote counting taking place on May 23. In 2014, the EC had also announced the poll schedule a day in advance, with nearly 97 crore eligible voters across over 12 lakh polling stations.

A comparative analysis of previous Lok Sabha elections reveals variations in the number of phases across states. In the 2019 general elections, Bihar, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh witnessed polling in seven phases. Contrastingly, the 2014 elections saw Bihar in six phases, West Bengal in five, and Uttar Pradesh in six. In the 2009 elections, Bihar was divided into four phases, West Bengal into three, and Uttar Pradesh into five. Similarly, in the 2004 elections, Bihar was divided into three phases, West Bengal had one phase, and Uttar Pradesh was divided into three.
