MacBook Pro with OLED screen is still coming but it may take a while before you can buy it

New Delhi ,UPDATED: Nov 10, 2023 13:52 IST

In the world of Windows, nowadays there are laptops that sport OLED screens. Their numbers are still in single digits and they are rather expensive, but the laptops with OLED screens exist. In the world of Apple and MacBooks, however, it might take a while before consumers get to see similar screens. A new report suggests that Apple is working on a MacBook Pro with an OLED screen but the laptop may not launch before 2026.

Currently Apple sells iPhone that have OLED screens. But such screens are expensive — and in some instances more delicate in terms of technology — and putting into bigger devices like the MacBook Pro 14 and the MacBook Pro 16 may take a while. But if it does happen, consumers can expect to get a MacBook Pro that will have a high-contrast and more vivid screen considering the fact that OLED displays are consistently more vibrant than the LCD screens.

According to 9to5Mac, analyst Jeff Pu from Haitong Intl Tech Research predicts that Apple will launch MacBook Pro with OLED screens in 2026. Both the Pro 14 and the Pro 16 will get the new display technology, notes the report. The analyst also says that the iPad 12.9 will be getting an OLED screen next year.

If Apple does come out with an OLED screen in MacBook Pro it would make total sense. For two reasons. One, we have already started seeing laptops with OLED screens in the Windows part of the world. Apple, obviously, will want to compete and keep the MacBook ahead or at par with what other laptops are offering.

And two, the OLED screen will allow Apple to segregate its MacBook laptops better, making the higher priced Pro machines more attractive despite their price.

In the last few years, due to Apple’s home-made M series chipsets, in terms of day-to-day performance there is very little that differentiates a regular MacBook from a Pro MacBook. The MacBook Pro does pack a serious amount of power under its hood with chips like M3 Max but this power is useful only to professionals who are working with multimedia content on their machines, or for people who are coding and building programs and apps.

But an OLED screen will immediately offer an advantage to the MacBook Pro over a regular MacBook, which likely will continue to use LCD display. And this advantage will be evident to all users. Although there are reports that the MacBook Air too will get an OLED screen, the chances of that happening in 2026 or at the same time when the Pro gets such a screen are almost negligible.

With an OLED screen, the MacBook Pro will also be able to compete better with Windows laptops. Although the current displays in MacBook 16 and MacBook 16 are top notch, on Windows-side there are some laptops that offer screens with higher Pixel density and with more vivid colours.
