An auto-rickshaw driver allegedly drugged and raped a 19-year-old nursing student on her way home from college in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri, police said. The driver offered spiked water to the girl and as she lost consciousness, he took her to a secluded place and raped her.

The girl’s family lodged a police complaint on Monday. The incident sparked massive protests in Ratnagiri and people blocked roads demanding justice.

Police are looking for the diver with the help of CCTV videos. The survivor has been admitted to a local hospital for treatment.

An 11-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the incident. The SIT will be led by a senior female officer.

The incident comes to light at a time when the nation is witnessing widespread protests seeking justice for a 31-year-old trainee doctor who was raped and murdered in Kolkata’s state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Healthcare professionals have been demanding laws for their security due to shifts at odd hours.
