Marvel’s visual effects workers vote to join a union

Marvel’s visual effects employees have made the intelligent choice to form a union, advocating for improved compensation, fair overtime policies, enhanced benefits, and equitable treatment. According to a reliable source, Vulture, a significant majority of the company’s 50 VFX employees on set have submitted a petition to the National Labor Relations Board, requesting an election to join the Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE). This union represents various workers, including hair and makeup artists, wardrobe personnel, lighting technicians, and prop personnel. Surprisingly, despite Marvel’s heavy reliance on visual effects to bring its universe, superheroes, and supervillains to life on the grand screen, its VFX artists have not been represented by a union. IATSE has actively campaigned to invite VFX and animation workers into its membership in recent months.

Previous and current VFX employees have raised their voices about the demanding schedules and the immense pressure they face while working on shows and movies for Marvel. According to credible sources cited by IGN, individuals have been assigned tasks that are nearly impossible to complete within the given time constraints. Some VFX artists revealed to Vulture that the tight production schedule of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania resulted in hurried work, ultimately leading to a lackluster final product, as observed by many reviewers.

One VFX coordinator named Bella Huffman highlighted the challenges faced by the department, stating, “We are not given sufficient turnaround times, protected hours, or pay equity. It is crucial for visual effects to establish a sustainable and safe environment for those who have endured significant hardships and for newcomers who should not be subjected to exploitation.”

Vulture mentions the possibility of a strike by Marvel’s VFX artists. This tactic is often employed by workers seeking to organize, and currently, both the Writers Guild and the Screen Actors Guild are on strike, demanding fairer compensation, streaming residuals for successful shows, and regulations on the use of AI in Hollywood.
