Mega explosion from Sun wow astronomers. Parker Solar Probe braces for impact

New Delhi,UPDATED: Feb 7, 2024 14:28 IST

In a stunning display of cosmic activity, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory’s (SOHO) coronagraphs have recorded an extraordinary full halo Coronal Mass Ejection (CME).

This remarkable event, where the CME completely encircles the sun, has caught the attention of space weather forecasters and astronomers alike.

A full halo CME is a rare occurrence that signifies a powerful solar phenomenon. When such an event is observed, it generates a mix of concern and excitement among scientists.

WATCH HALO CME EXPLODES FROM SUN

This is because a halo CME can be a precursor to geomagnetic storms if it is directed towards Earth. These storms have the potential to disrupt satellite communications, power grids, and even cause auroras to appear at lower latitudes than usual.

Fortunately, this particular full halo CME is not on a collision course with our planet. The event was caused by an explosion on the far side of the sun, directly opposite Earth.

According to NASA’s models, the trajectory of the CME will intersect with the Parker Solar Probe, a spacecraft designed to study the outer corona of the sun, before it splits into two separate entities near Mars’ orbit. This means that Earth and its inhabitants are safe from any direct impact.

The detection of such a full halo CME is a testament to the capabilities of the SOHO mission, a joint project between the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA.

SOHO’s primary objective is to observe the sun’s internal structure, its outer atmosphere, and the solar wind that permeates our solar system. Discoveries made by SOHO have provided invaluable insights into the workings of our star and its effects on space weather.

As the sun approaches the peak of its 11-year solar cycle, known as the solar maximum, events like these are expected to become more frequent.

While this CME may not pose a threat to Earth, scientists will continue to monitor the sun’s activity closely.
