Microsoft CEO Expresses Desire to Eliminate Xbox Exclusives, Attributes Inability to Do So to Sony

Exclusive Games and the FTC-Microsoft Trial

During the recent FTC-Microsoft trial, the head of Microsoft expressed his desire to eliminate exclusive games, but acknowledged that the company is compelled to have them due to Sony’s influence.

According to the testimony of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella (via The Verge), he made these comments while discussing the company’s strategies and future plans. When asked about platform-exclusive games, he stated:

“If it were up to me, I would love to eliminate exclusives entirely in the console market. However, as a player with a relatively small market share, I must acknowledge that the dominant player, Sony, has established market competition based on exclusivity. Therefore, we have no choice but to operate within that framework. Personally, I do not support this approach.”

As highlighted in The Verge’s report, Nadella recognizes that exclusive games are a significant factor in consumers’ console purchasing decisions and play a crucial role in attracting new subscribers to Xbox Game Pass.

In response to Game Pass, PlayStation’s Jim Ryan stated yesterday, on June 27, that multiple publishers have expressed concerns about the service. In his deposition, Ryan claimed to have “spoken to all publishers and found unanimous disapproval of Game Pass due to its perceived negative impact on value.”
