US Senator Ron Wyden is urging three different entities to initiate independent investigations into Microsoft following the recent cyber attack that targeted government officials, including Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
According to Microsoft, a Chinese threat actor known as Storm-0558 gained access to email accounts belonging to approximately 25 organizations in the public cloud, including government agencies. The compromised accounts also included those of individuals associated with the affected organizations.
In a letter addressed to various government agencies, Senator Wyden compares this attack to the 2020 SolarWinds campaign, which involved the hacking of US government emails by a Russian threat actor.
Microsoft may face multiple investigations
Microsoft is already facing scrutiny in the EU due to antitrust and anticompetitive cases. Its Azure platform has also recently been criticized for unfair cloud practices.
Now, three US agencies are being urged to launch their own investigations into Microsoft.
Senator Wyden specifically asks the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to examine whether the company violated its own best practices and those recommended by the National Security Agency (NSA). The Department of Justice is requested to investigate whether Microsoft’s negligent practices violated federal law, while the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is called upon to investigate potential violations of federal laws related to deceptive business practices.
In conclusion, Senator Wyden states, “I also urge you to take all necessary steps to hold the company responsible for any violations of that order.”
Microsoft provided a statement to CNBC:
“This incident highlights the evolving challenges of cybersecurity in the face of sophisticated attacks. We are actively cooperating with government agencies on this matter and remain committed to sharing information through the Microsoft Threat Intelligence blog.”
The company has not responded to our request for comment on the potential impact of the three separate investigations.
