Microsoft takes a cue from 343 Industries, kills Cortana in Windows 11

Saying Goodbye to Cortana: Microsoft Disables Digital Assistant on Windows 11

In a recent update, Microsoft has disabled the Cortana app on Windows 11, marking the end of an era for the digital assistant. This move follows the discontinuation of Cortana apps for iOS and Android three years ago.

Upon launching Cortana on Windows 11 after the update, users will receive a notice stating that the standalone app for Cortana is deprecated. For more information on the end of support for Cortana, you can visit this support page.

Furthermore, Microsoft plans to discontinue Cortana in Teams mobile, Teams Display, and Teams Rooms by fall 2023. However, Cortana in Outlook mobile will still be available.

Cortana initially debuted as a digital assistant on Windows Phone and later made its way to Windows 10 in 2015. It offered deep integration with Windows, allowing users to perform voice commands, set reminders, open applications, and more. Cortana even played a role in the setup process for new Windows devices.

However, Cortana faced tough competition from digital assistants by other companies like Amazon’s Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple’s Siri. The demise of Windows Phone was arguably the final blow for Cortana.

Despite the discontinuation of Cortana, Microsoft is actively developing another digital assistant called Windows Copilot. Unlike its predecessor, this new assistant is a chatbot powered by Bing Chat and OpenAI’s GPT-4, rather than a voice assistant named after a video game character.
