Following the recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, Misha Collins, known for his role in Supernatural, has once again expressed his unwavering support for the LGBTQIA community and upheld the representation of Castiel’s sexuality.

In response to the recent ruling of the Supreme Court allowing private businesses to discriminate against the LGBTQIA community, Misha Collins, renowned for his roles in Supernatural and Gotham Knights, took to social media to not only voice his concerns regarding the court’s decisions but also to reaffirm his support for the LGBTQIA community. In a powerful Instagram caption accompanied by artwork from talented artist Gio, depicting Castiel with rainbow wings, Collins boldly declared, “Also, Cas is gay.” This statement has stirred significant discussions within the online community, where Castiel’s sexuality and the potential romantic relationship between Castiel and Dean Winchester (portrayed by Jensen Ackles) have long been subjects of debate.

In his Instagram post, Collins expressed his dismay over the Supreme Court’s recent rulings, highlighting the contradiction between their decisions on affirmative action and LGBTQIA discrimination. With Pride Month drawing to a close, Collins pledged to continue fighting for equality and a society that values diversity. His statement, “Also, Cas is gay,” served as a powerful affirmation of Castiel’s sexuality, solidifying the character’s representation within the Supernatural universe.

Supernatural: Misha Collins Addresses Dean/Castiel Translation Controversy

In November 2020, Bleeding Cool addressed the controversy surrounding the Spanish version of the Supernatural episode “Despair,” in which Castiel’s expression of love for Dean was translated differently compared to the original U.S. version. Accusations of corporate interference and claims that the storyline perpetuated harmful LGBTQIA tropes circulated on social media, prompting Collins to convene a meeting with the Supernatural fan community on Instagram to address these concerns.

In a heartfelt video message, Collins clarified that there was no attempt to minimize or erase LGBTQ representation within the show. He refuted the existence of an alternative ending and attributed the difference in translations to the interpretation of a rogue translator. Collins emphasized that Castiel’s declaration of love not only saved Dean but also played a crucial role in the salvation of humanity. He further highlighted the narrative development in the series finale, indicating the ongoing presence and significance of Castiel within the Supernatural universe.

“I’m seeing a lot of commentary on the ending of SPN & the recent Spanish dub, and disheartened to see there are a lot of misconceptions that are making many in our family feel unheard & unsupported, so I’m calling a #SPNFamilyMeeting to sort a few things out for the record:

There was no conspiracy within the network, staff, or cast of SPN to minimize or erase representation from the narrative & there was no alternate ending to 1518. Dean was always too stunned in the moment to reply. (Apparently a rogue translator penned their own dialogue.)

Also, in my opinion Cas doesn’t play into the “bury your gays” trope. His declaration of love saves Dean, enabling Sam and Dean to save all of humanity. And Cas doesn’t die! He actually goes on to rebuild Heaven!

Was the show perfect? No. Could Cas’ departure have had more resonance in the final episodes? Sure. But I’m confident you guys can sort that part out as your writing and art and imaginations play the story out past the last frames we filmed.

I’m proud to have spent more than a decade of my life telling a story where good consistently triumphs over evil…

And I’m especially proud that my character’s parting message was, “expressing your true self, letting yourself love who you truly want to love, openly & honestly, can literally save the world… & in the end, good things do happen — & they’re worth fighting for.” I love you all.”
