Molyneux Hypes New Project, Teases “Never Been Seen” Mechanic in Namedropped Fable

Peter Molyneux has a notorious history of overhyping his projects. While he has created some classic games like Populous, Syndicate, and Fable, his later years at Microsoft/Lionhead Studios were marked by exaggerated promises, such as the ill-fated Kinect life sim Project Milo. After leaving Microsoft, Molyneux founded 22cans, a studio known for high-concept mobile games like Curiosity: What’s Inside the Cube? and Godus, which either disappointed or remained unfinished.

However, Molyneux remains undeterred by his past missteps. In a recent interview with Gamereactor, he discussed his latest project, acknowledging that fans would be “very annoyed and angry” if he engaged in his typical overhyping. Yet, he couldn’t resist doing just that. Apparently, 22cans’ upcoming venture will be a full-fledged PC/console project, unlike their previous mobile experiments. Molyneux compared the game to Fable, Dungeon Keeper, and Black & White, while also claiming to have devised a groundbreaking game mechanic never before seen.

“I do think we have stumbled upon a mechanic that has never been seen in a game before. I feel like we are exploiting that mechanic in a world and an environment that may be familiar to people. And because it is set in a familiar environment, it will feel refreshingly different. I can’t divulge too much about it at the moment, as I want to maintain the element of mystique. However, I can say that it will offer an experience reminiscent of the likes of Fable, Black & White, and Dungeon Keeper. We have also made the decision to focus on PC and console platforms for now, although we are not ruling out a mobile version in the future. The primary reason for this choice is that we require the power these platforms offer.”

While this statement sounds promising, it also raises questions. Fable, Black & White, and Dungeon Keeper were vastly different games, so comparing the new project to them doesn’t provide much clarification, aside from indicating its ambitious nature. As for the revolutionary mechanic, its true worth remains to be seen, as new mechanics can sometimes fail for valid reasons. Nevertheless, Molyneux appears heavily invested in this project, even contributing to the programming, a notable departure from his previous role since Black & White in 2001.

Interestingly, Molyneux also shared his thoughts on the recently released trailer for the new Fable, despite having no involvement in the project. While he expressed some excitement about the game, he expressed a desire for more gameplay footage (a sentiment shared by many). He also highlighted that the humor in the original Fable games stemmed more from the game’s playful freedom than the writing, perhaps pointing out the overtly comical tone of Microsoft’s latest trailer.

So, what do you think? Will Molyneux redeem himself with another noteworthy creation? Or will the cycle of hype and disappointment persist?
