Mortal Kombat 1 – How to Unlock All Kameo Fighters Including Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Motaro

Mortal Kombat 1 arrives next week and promises to deliver a satisfying fresh dose of ultraviolence for fans of the long-running fatality-packed fighting series. In addition to a new tag-team mechanic that lets you pair a main character with a backup “Kameo” fighter, you can look forward to an epic all-new story, regular seasonal updates that will add new Invasion mode missions, and more.

While Mortal Kombat 1 adds plenty of new features, the series has also always leaned heavily on nostalgia and holds onto certain old-school elements that you don’t necessarily see that often in video games today. That includes unlockable characters! While there’s only one unlockable core fighter in the game (find out how to get Havik here), there are five Kameo fighters that need to be unlocked – classic versions of Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Kung Lao, as well as Shujinko and Motaro. That’s a pretty decent chunk of the overall Kameo roster, as there are only 15 of them total. So, how does one get their hands on these additional Kameo fighters? Scroll on down for the answer…

The additional Kameo fighters are all unlocked by leveling up your Mortal Kombat 1 profile. There are several ways to level up in Mortal Kombat 1, but we’re specifically talking about the level you see attached to your profile card in the upper-left corner of the screen while on the title screen. So, how do you boost your level? Easy – just play the game! You’ll gain XP to boost your level by playing Mortal Kombat 1’s single-player modes or online. The additional Kameo fighters will be unlocked at regular intervals depending on their placement on the character select screen – Scorpion at level 5, Sub-Zero at lvl 10, Kung Lao at lvl 15, and so on.

And there you go! As long as you stick to it, you should have a full Kameo roster before too soon. Go stomp some folks with Motaro.

Mortal Kombat 1 launches on PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and Switch on September 9, although those who have purchased the premium editions of the game will be able to play tomorrow (September 14). You can check out more of Wccftech’s Mortal Kombat 1 guides here.
