critic’s rating:

4.0/5

Karan Johar makes a triumphant return with his latest film, a love story that combines humor and introspection in a refreshingly unique way. Taking inspiration from classic Hindi cinema and infusing it with contemporary values, Johar delivers a heartwarming romance that also explores themes of acceptance and the complexities of relationships.

The film introduces us to Rocky Randhawa, a wealthy Delhite who appears to be the stereotypical spoiled rich kid. However, there is more to him than meets the eye. When he discovers a potential connection between his grandfather and Rani Chatterjee’s grandmother, he sets out to reunite them in hopes of unlocking memories. In the process, Rocky and Rani fall in love but face the challenge of their families’ conflicting backgrounds. To win over their families, they decide to switch places, leading to a series of hilarious and heartfelt moments.

In terms of comedy, the film excels thanks to the brilliant writing by Ishita Moitra, Shashank Khaitan, and Sumit Roy. Johar proves his versatility as a director by delivering a film that is not only romantic but also filled with laugh-out-loud moments. While the film maintains a light-hearted tone, it also tackles important issues such as body shaming, judgmental behavior, and patriarchy. It advocates for compassion and understanding, emphasizing the importance of embracing our differences and celebrating love above all else.

The film’s stellar cast elevates the storytelling further. Acting veterans Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi, and Jaya Bachchan captivate the audience with their powerful performances. Dharmendra exudes charm and sensitivity, while Azmi brings gravitas and poise to her character. Bachchan shines as the strict matriarch, showcasing her acting prowess. The supporting cast, including Churni Ganguly, Aamir Bashir, Kshitee Jog, Anjali Anand, and Tota Roy Chowdhury, also delivers standout moments.

However, it is the dynamic duo of Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt that steals the show. Singh displays impeccable comedic timing and effortlessly portrays his character’s vulnerability. Bhatt, known for her versatility, seamlessly transitions from intense drama to comedy, portraying a spirited journalist irresistibly drawn to her complete opposite. She showcases both the rebellious and vulnerable sides of her character with remarkable ease.

In conclusion, “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani” is a delightful entertainer that offers something for everyone. With its witty storyline and stellar performances, it is a must-watch film. Karan Johar once again proves his directorial prowess and leaves the audience eagerly anticipating his next project.
