Multiplexes place high stakes on Adipurush following lackluster 4th quarter

Cinema exhibitors are placing their bets on actor Prabhas’ legendary mythological film ‘Adipurush’ to revive footfall after a challenging fourth quarter marked by underwhelming film performances, except for ‘Pathaan’ and ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’.

Gautam Dutta, the Co-CEO of PVR Inox, expressed excitement about the overwhelming response received for the pre-bookings of ‘Adipurush’. He mentioned that the advance bookings for the film’s release day have been doubling every day, reaching over 1.5 lakh admissions yesterday.

Dutta emphasized that the film provides a captivating big-screen experience that appeals to audiences of all ages. He noted that while the Telugu version has the highest number of bookings, senior citizens are attracted to the film due to its mythological angle, and children are drawn to the visual effects (VFX).

With an estimated budget of Rs 500 crore, ‘Adipurush’ has been released today in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada, across 5,000 screens in India.

Ashish Saksena, the COO of BookMyShow, reported that the film has crossed 1.5 million ticket sales on their platform. He mentioned that the Telugu version leads in ticket sales, closely followed by Hindi. Saksena highlighted that the 3D format is the most preferred choice, with over 72% of movie-goers opting for an immersive movie-watching experience.

Karan Taurani, the SVP of Elara Securities, stated that ‘Adipurush’ will bring relief to cinema exhibitors who have been facing low occupancy levels below pre-pandemic standards. He added that ‘The Kerala Story’ has been the only positive aspect in the industry. Taurani projected a strong opening day in South India with an expected box office collection of Rs 50-60 crore for dubbed languages, while Hindi is predicted to perform well with Rs 20 crore. The lifetime domestic box office collection is estimated to reach Rs 350-400 crore.

Amrita Pandey, the CEO of Junglee Pictures, expressed hopes for the success of theatrical releases in June and July, as this period has consistently proven fruitful for youth and family films. She mentioned positive admissions for ‘Zara Hatke’ and ‘Zara Bachke’ and their encouraging impact on the industry.

Girish Johar, a film business expert, expects ‘Adipurush’ to attract a large audience across different languages, as it is the first major tentpole film to release after ‘Pathaan’. Johar also noted the favorability of the holiday season for school children and the film’s deep roots in Indian culture, which would appeal to family audiences.

Johar further emphasized the changing preferences of audiences, who are now willing to watch content-driven films in theaters without being concerned about the genre or cast.

Dutta highlighted the increasing popularity of multilingual content among pan-India audiences and predicted more success for such films on a national level.

According to a GroupM-Ormax Media report, the gross box office collection for 2022 was Rs 10,637 crore.
