Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Establishes Dedicated Ward at SevenHills Hospital in Response to Monkeypox Concerns

In light of the World Health Organization’s recent designation of monkeypox as a public health emergency of international concern, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken proactive steps to safeguard public health. A specialized 14-bed ward has been established at SevenHills Hospital in Marol as a precautionary measure to address any potential cases of monkeypox, a viral illness characterized by rash and flu-like symptoms.

While no confirmed cases of monkeypox have been reported in India to date, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issued comprehensive guidelines last week outlining protocols for managing the disease. In response to these guidelines, the BMC convened an emergency meeting on Wednesday with airport authorities to enhance preventive measures.

As part of these measures, the Airport Health Officer (APHO) department has commenced thermal screening of passengers arriving from countries where monkeypox has been reported, including Pakistan and Sweden. Additionally, a health information desk has been established at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to provide essential information and guidance to travelers.

“The APHO will be screening passengers arriving from African nations, where the monkeypox outbreak initially emerged,” stated a BMC spokesperson. “Should a passenger exhibit symptoms indicative of monkeypox, they will be promptly referred to SevenHills Hospital for isolation and further medical evaluation.”

The BMC remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of Mumbai’s residents and will continue to monitor the situation closely. Further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
