New principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital sacked following students’ protest

The newly-appointed principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was sacked on Wednesday after students demanded the removal of those on administrative duty when the hospital was vandalised last week.

Dr Suhrita Paul was appointed the principal of the RG Kar hospital after Dr Sandip Ghosh resigned from the post following uproar over the horrifying rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor.

Besides Dr Paul, hospital superintendent and the head of the Chest Department at the hospital were also sacked.

Earlier in the day, students and resident doctors protesting against the rape-murder case marched towards West Bengal Swasthya Bhawan to raise their demands. In a meeting with health department officials, they demanded that all administrative persons like Medical Superintendent cum Vice-Principal (MSVP) and Principal, who were present on the day of the vandalism, need to be changed.

Following this, the Bengal government ordered the removal of Dr Paul and others. In Dr Paul’s place, Manas Bandopadhyay will be the new principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Before this, Bandopadhyay was the principal at Barasat Medical College and Hospital.

A 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Hospital during the early hours of August 9. The incident caused a huge uproar among the medical fraternity, and women took to streets in protest.

Days after the rape-murder took place, the hospital was vandalised by a mob, many were injured and police fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. Visuals showed the mob vandalising the emergency ward of the hospital and also some police vehicles parked outside.
