New Studio Cliffhanger Games Confirms Development of Black Panther Video Game at EA

Electronic Arts (EA) has officially confirmed its collaboration with Marvel to develop a single-player game centered around the popular superhero, Black Panther. The game is being created by EA’s newly established Seattle-based studio, Cliffhanger Games, and promises to deliver an original, story-driven experience set in the world of Wakanda. Leading the project is Kevin Stephens, who previously served as the studio head for Monolith Productions during the development of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. The partnership between EA and Marvel, formed last year, aims to produce at least three new games, with the Black Panther game being one of them. Although still in the early stages of development, no specific release date has been announced for the title, codenamed ‘Project Rainier’.

Kevin Stephens expressed the team’s commitment to providing fans with an immersive and authentic Black Panther gaming experience. In a blog post, he stated, “Our goal is to offer players unprecedented agency and control over their narrative, allowing them to fully explore and engage with the rich superhero world of Wakanda.” While the term ‘open-world’ hasn’t been explicitly used, the description of the game as a ‘sandbox’ suggests a focus on exploration and freedom, similar to the approach taken in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. It’s worth noting that the development team is still in the process of being assembled, and interested individuals can find job postings on Cliffhanger Games’ official website.

Although no specific details have been revealed, gaming journalist Jeff Grubb previously hinted that the Black Panther game’s premise would involve the player assuming the role of a successor to the deceased Black Panther. To prove their worthiness, players may need to undertake a series of trials or challenges, culminating in their ascension to the position of Wakanda’s new protector and leader. However, it’s important to acknowledge that given the lack of information regarding the game’s timeline, this speculation does not necessarily imply the death of King T’Challa. In the comics, Wakanda has been ruled by various individuals, including King T’Chaka, who eventually met his demise due to his confrontation with the villainous Ulysses Klaw. T’Challa, King T’Chaka’s son, was then revealed to have secretly participated in an open challenge to become the renowned Black Panther. Thus, there’s a possibility that the game may depict an origin story, but this remains speculative at this point.

Black Panther is the second of three games being developed through EA’s collaboration with Marvel. While one of the projects is yet to be announced, the other confirmed game is an Iron Man title being created by EA Motive, based in Montreal. EA Motive is best known for their work on the highly anticipated Dead Space remake. In recent years, Marvel has been actively partnering with renowned studios to expand its presence in the gaming industry. Insomniac Games, for example, successfully launched Spider-Man in 2018 and is set to release Spider-Man 2 in the future, alongside a standalone Wolverine game. Additionally, Amy Hennig’s new studio, SkyDance Media, is spearheading an ambitious World War II game that features Captain America and Black Panther as prominent characters.

As for the Black Panther game, there is currently no specific release window, but it is expected to be available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X platforms.
