NHTSA Investigates Power Issue in Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 Electric Vehicle

The U.S. National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently investigating Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 electric vehicle (EV).

As per the NHTSA, 30 consumers have made complaints about “a loss of motive power,” leading to an investigation by the Office of Defects. Owners of the Ioniq 5 have reported hearing a loud pop noise before the vehicle loses power and forward motion.

In its filing, the NHTSA stated, “Many consumers report a loud pop noise followed by a warning displayed in their dashboard and immediately experience a loss of motive power that ranges from a reduction to a complete loss of motive power. ODI conducted several owner interviews confirming a range of loss of power and varying time intervals between the warning message and loss of power.”

No crashes, fires, injuries, or fatalities have occurred due to the problem, according to the NHTSA. Hyundai attributes the power failure to the Ioniq 5’s Integrated Control Charging Unit (ICCU), which powers its main battery and low-voltage 12V battery.

In response to the investigation, Hyundai stated that the company is fully cooperating and will launch a service campaign in July to update the software of affected vehicles and repair or replace ICCUs when necessary, according to a statement given to the Associated Press.

Additionally, various Reddit threads have been created by Ioniq 5 owners reporting issues with the ICCU. However, it is worth mentioning that I personally have not encountered the ICCU issue with my Ioniq 5, which has covered 22,000km.

It is currently unknown if Hyundai Canada plans to launch a similar service campaign. MobileSyrup has reached out to Hyundai for further details.

In other news related to the Ioniq 5, Hyundai has confirmed plans to release an update for the EV’s ‘i-Pedal’ mode/regenerative braking and the SUV’s brake lights not turning on until it is almost at a complete stop. This update will be available in Canada in July.

Update 06/19/2022 7:01pm ET: Hyundai Canada has confirmed that the Ioniq 5’s brake light update will be launched in Canada in July.
