NHTSA investigates Tesla over steering control and power steering issues

Welcome back to another captivating installment of ‘The NHTSA Investigates Tesla’.

It seems like Tesla’s vehicles are constantly under investigation, with new cases popping up on a regular basis (1), (2), (3), (4), (5). This time, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is delving into the matter of 280,000 Teslas experiencing steering control and power steering loss.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time the NHTSA has had their eye on Tesla’s steering wheel. Just earlier this year, they launched an investigation into reports of the steering wheel detaching in Tesla’s Model Y.

However, the focus this time is primarily on Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. According to the NHTSA, they have received 12 complaints from owners highlighting the steering issue, often accompanied by a warning message on the driver’s display. TechCrunch has shared these findings.

The incidents leading up to this investigation describe scenarios where the steering wheel would either lock up or become extremely stiff while driving, resulting in the vehicle veering off the road or even crashing. Some owners reported experiencing this problem shortly after purchasing their new Tesla, while others encountered it after several months or years of use.

An owner of a Model Y mentioned in April that Tesla’s service centers were unable to rectify the issue, as they were facing delays due to a scarcity of parts.

If the investigation determines that this defect significantly affects the vehicle’s performance or functionality, it may necessitate a recall.
