Nintendo Still Has Metroid Prime 4 Down as a Switch Game

Nintendo has provided an update on their upcoming exclusive titles for the Nintendo Switch, and interestingly, they still include the highly-anticipated Metroid Prime 4 as a Switch game.

In their latest financial report, which highlights strong sales and profits thanks to Tears of the Kingdom and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo has released a comprehensive list of both upcoming and announced games for the Nintendo Switch.

Of note is the inclusion of Metroid Prime 4, which, although it currently carries a “temp” title and a “TBA” release date, reaffirms Nintendo’s commitment to bringing the game to the Switch. Below is the complete list:

  • Detective Pikachu Returns – October 6, 2023
  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder – October 20, 2023
  • WarioWare: Move It! – November 3, 2023
  • Super Mario RPG – November 17, 2023
  • Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (temp.) – 2024
  • A brand new game featuring Princess Peach (temp.) – 2024
  • Metroid Prime 4 (temp.) – TBA

Metroid Prime 4 has faced numerous challenges during its development since its announcement three years ago. In 2019, Nintendo made the decision to restart development, enlisting the help of Retro Studios, the developers behind the original Metroid Prime series. According to Nintendo, this decision was made because the fourth installment did not meet their standards for a sequel to the Metroid Prime series. While not officially confirmed by Nintendo, Eurogamer reported that Bandai Namco Studios Singapore was working on Metroid Prime 4.

Since then, Nintendo has remained tight-lipped about Metroid Prime 4, leading to speculation that the game either encountered development difficulties or shifted its focus to the next-generation successor of the Switch, rumored to launch in late 2024.

Despite the absence of Metroid Prime 4 during June’s Nintendo Direct, the fact that Nintendo still includes the game in their list of upcoming titles for the Switch suggests that the company may plan to re-reveal it later in 2023. It could potentially serve as the final Nintendo Switch game while also being a launch title for the next-generation console, similar to how Breath of the Wild was the last game for the Wii U and a launch title for the Switch.
