Renowned film art director, Nitin Desai, tragically passed away on Wednesday at his ND Studios in Maharashtra’s Raigad district. The police discovered his body hanging by a rope in the morning. Upon receiving the alert, authorities rushed to the scene. Desai had an illustrious career, serving as an art director and production designer for numerous Bollywood and Marathi movies.

Over the course of his 20-year career, Nitin Desai collaborated with renowned filmmakers such as Ashutosh Gowarikar, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani, and Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Let’s delve into some of his iconic works, accolades, and more.

Iconic Works of Nitin Desai

Nitin Desai made his art directorial debut in 1989 with the film “Parinda” and went on to work on several other noteworthy projects. Some of his notable works include “1942: A Love Story” (1993), “Khamoshi: The Musical” (1995), “Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha” (1998), “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” (1999), “Mission Kashmir” (2000), “Raju Chacha” (2000), “Devdas” (2002), “Munnabhai M.B.B.S.” (2003), “Jodha Akbar” (2008), “Dostana” (2008), “Once Upon a Time in Mumbai” (2010), “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo” (2015), and many more.

His most recent venture as an art director was the film “Panipat,” directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, which was released in 2019. In the same year, he served as the production designer for the series “Paurashpur” (2020). Desai also directed his first film, “Hello Jai Hind!,” in 2011 and produced “Raja Shivchatrapati” (2008) and “Truckbhar Swapna” (2018).

Nitin Desai was the recipient of numerous awards for his outstanding work. He won four National Awards for his contributions to films like “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” (2000), “Lagaan” (2002), and “Devdas” (2003). Additionally, he received three Filmfare Awards for “1942: A Love Story” (1997), “Khamoshi” (1997), and “Devdas” (2003).

In 2009, Desai was honored with the IFA Best Art Direction Award for his work on “Jodha Akbar.” He also won the Maharashtra State Award in 2009 for “Harishchandrachi Factory.”
