NPR Reports: El Niño Expected to Extend Through 2024, with Intensified Heat

In the coming months, the United States can expect more hot weather, as federal forecasters warn. This is attributed to both human-caused climate change and the El Niño climate pattern.

El Niño is a cyclic climate phenomenon that brings warm water to the equatorial Pacific Ocean, resulting in higher average global temperatures. The current El Niño started in June and is expected to continue until March 2024, as announced by officials from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

According to NOAA meteorologist Matthew Rosencrans, there is a 90% or greater chance of El Niño continuing through the northern hemisphere winter.
