Nvidia Introduces Portal: Prelude RTX, a Free-to-Play Experience

Nvidia has recently unveiled its highly-anticipated RTX 40-series lineup in the exciting new game, Portal: Prelude RTX. As a community remaster of one of the most popular Portal mods, this game offers an immersive experience with full ray tracing, DLSS 3 support, and improved performance through Nvidia’s Reflex and RTX IO technologies. The best part? It’s available to play for free, but only if you own the original version of Portal.

The original Portal RTX DLC by Nvidia for Portal has been available on Steam for a while. Now, fans can look forward to a remake of the unofficial mod, Portal: Prelude, releasing on July 18 at 12 p.m. PT. This prequel, set before the main game, promises an incredibly challenging 10-hour campaign, featuring new gameplay mechanics, 19 previously unseen test chambers, and a fully developed storyline with voice acting.

While Portal: Prelude began as a successful mod, it has now evolved into a standalone game thanks to the modding expertise of Nicolas Grevet (NykO18) using Nvidia’s RTX Remix creator toolkit. This modding platform enables creators to harness the power of Nvidia’s RTX tools, including ray tracing and DLSS, to revamp classic games. The end result is a collaboration between Nvidia and Grevet, bringing forth a new and enhanced version of Portal Prelude.

The game fully utilizes Nvidia’s latest generation of GPUs, taking advantage of the impressive DLSS 3 to boost frame rates and Reflex to reduce latency. The development team, composed of five modders, painstakingly upgraded every frame, resulting in high-resolution imagery with realistic ray tracing, lighting, and enhanced models. It’s like experiencing Portal on a whole new level.

Nvidia promises significant performance improvements with its RTX product stack (DLSS 3, Reflex, RTX IO). When played at 4K with max settings, the game can run up to 5x faster on average, translating to 80 frames per second (fps) or more. However, this level of optimization is exclusively available for the RTX 4080 and RTX 4090. Additionally, RTX IO enhances texture loading speeds by 5x and reduces storage space usage by 44%.

In addition to the game release, Nvidia is also launching a new Game Ready Driver that includes optimizations for other games like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. This driver further enhances the performance of RTX IO and Microsoft DirectStorage in Windows for these two titles.

If you already own Portal, you can download the new prequel on Steam. Nvidia has not mentioned availability on other platforms, so Steam seems to be the only option for now.

Nvidia has also hinted at the upcoming release of the 16GB version of the RTX 4060 Ti later this month, further reinforcing the speculation that Nvidia will not be producing a Founders Edition of the card.
