Nware and Microsoft Sign 10-Year Agreement Following UK’s Block on Activision Acquisition

Microsoft has announced a 10-year partnership with Nware, a Spanish cloud-gaming platform, to bring Xbox and Activision Blizzard games to their platform. This comes shortly after the UK blocked Microsoft’s $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, citing concerns of competition in the cloud gaming market.

This agreement is part of Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to address these concerns and expand the availability of popular games on cloud gaming platforms. Microsoft President Brad Smith expressed optimism about the partnership, stating that it, along with other recent commitments, will increase the availability of games on cloud streaming services.

In addition to Nware, Microsoft has also signed similar deals with other streaming platform owners such as Valve, Nvidia, and Boosteroid. They have even offered Sony, a vocal opponent of the Activision acquisition, a 10-year Call of Duty license. This aligns with an agreement to bring the billion-dollar franchise to Nintendo’s Switch.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) decision emphasized Microsoft’s dominance in the cloud gaming sector, estimating their market share to be between 60% and 70%. The CMA also highlighted Microsoft’s competitive advantages, including ownership of Xbox, Windows, and Azure, a leading cloud provider.

The Activision deal is the largest technology company acquisition that the CMA has blocked. Europe will make a final decision on the deal by May 22, and the US Federal Trade Commission is also seeking to block it.

In premarket trading, Microsoft shares saw a slight decrease, while Activision’s shares increased by 0.2%.
