One-time FSD Transfers Offered to Tesla Customers When Purchasing New Vehicles

Tesla is now offering customers the opportunity to transfer their purchased Full Self-Driving (FSD) software to a new vehicle, according to Not A Tesla App. During an earnings call, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, referred to this as a “one-time amnesty” without providing specific details at the time.

Yesterday, Twitter user @Kdahlenburg shared the official terms of Tesla’s FSD transfer offer, which requires customers to purchase a new Tesla and take delivery before September 30th, 2023.

Tesla clarifies that it cannot guarantee delivery by the program end date and that the offer does not apply retroactively after delivery. It also states that owners will lose their FSD on the current vehicle “up to one week” before the scheduled delivery day.

During the earnings call, Musk mentioned that the newly purchased vehicle must be delivered by the end of Q3. Additionally, he revealed that Tesla is in talks to license FSD software to another automaker.

Previously, FSD purchases were considered permanent and owners would have to repurchase the software if they wanted to upgrade to a different Tesla model or in the event of a total loss due to a crash. However, with this new offer, Tesla explicitly states that future transfers of FSD will not be allowed.

Some Tesla owners have expressed frustration over the lack of flexibility with FSD purchases, especially given the increase in cost. Although this offer may not satisfy all customers, it could potentially boost Tesla sales during a quarter where deliveries were already expected to decline.
