Organize your cluttered Google Docs files with Google’s latest AI tool

Google is set to launch a new tool called NotebookLM, which is designed to help users organize their cluttered Google Docs accounts. Whether you’re a college student or a professional, this tool will be a game-changer for you. Let’s say you have a Google Docs file full of unstructured notes from your class. It’s a chaotic mess of ideas that you can’t make sense of. But with NotebookLM, you can now request a concise summary of your document, giving you a better understanding of its content. The original file will remain intact for your reference. What’s more, NotebookLM has the ability to extract key topics and questions from the summary, helping you gain deeper insights into the material.

NotebookLM doesn’t stop at just one document. It can pull information from multiple sources, broadening its scope and enhancing its effectiveness. Similar to Google’s other AI, Bard, you can ask NotebookLM specific questions to guide its response. For example, if you have an article about neuroscience, you can instruct the AI to generate a list of key terms related to dopamine from that text.

But there is a minor caveat. NotebookLM, despite being incredibly helpful, has the potential to create false information. It’s important to cross-check the generated responses with the original source material to ensure accuracy. If the AI pulls information from multiple sources, rest assured that each response will include proper citations, providing transparency and accountability.

Currently, NotebookLM is in its experimental phase, with a limited release. If you’re interested in trying it out, you can sign up for the waitlist on the Google Labs website. Once you secure a spot, Google will notify you via email. The company encourages users to provide feedback to further improve the AI’s capabilities.

Interestingly, NotebookLM was actually introduced to the world during Google I/O 2023 under the project name “Tailwind.” The event showcased various upcoming devices and software, most of which have been released, while a few are yet to be unveiled. For instance, the Universal Translator, an AI video dubbing service capable of real-time speech translation, remains eagerly anticipated. Additionally, details about the Sidekick panel, a Google Docs feature that generates text prompts while writing, are scarce.

We reached out to Google for insights on the missing I/O 2023 technologies and inquiring about the release date of the final version of NotebookLM. Stay tuned for further updates on this story.
