Ousted lobbyist shares insights as UAW dismisses top lawyer

Nassar, the union’s top Washington lobbyist since 2011, has made the decision to resign after being presented with an ultimatum during a video call with the union’s human resources director earlier this month, as reported by Automotive News. He will officially leave the union at the end of the month to pursue another opportunity within the labor sector, without disclosing the specific details of his new position.

According to the UAW’s annual disclosure, Nassar received a base salary of $146,396 in 2022, as well as $11,984 in allowances and reimbursements.

Nassar expressed feeling excluded from decision-making under the leadership of Fain, who was elected in March. He pointed out that he was not informed in advance about leadership’s visits to Washington, D.C., or their communications with the White House.

“My responsibilities were suddenly taken away from me,” Nassar shared. “Other individuals took on the role that I was originally hired for.”

Despite seeking an explanation, Nassar never received a definitive answer as to why he was instructed to retire, resign, or face termination.

“I believe it’s because Fain wants his own team,” Nassar commented. “He is the sixth president I have worked for, and in the past, all departments were reassessed except for the legislative department. This implied that people were satisfied with our work. However, this time it was different. There was simply no interest in considering my perspective.”

Nevertheless, Nassar expressed satisfaction with the accomplishments of his department, including the successful advocacy for labor protections in the USMCA trade deal, as well as securing investments through the Inflation Reduction Act and the CHIPS Act.

“We have achieved a great deal,” Nassar proudly stated. “I am proud of our accomplishments, and I genuinely hope for the union’s continued success in the future. Nothing would please me more than witnessing Fain’s prosperous presidency.”
