Overwatch 2 Becomes Steam’s Worst-Reviewed Game of All Time

Overwatch 2 has set a new record as the lowest-rated game on Steam. The game, developed by Blizzard and traditionally exclusive to the Battle.net client, made its debut on Steam on August 10, and the response from players has been overwhelmingly negative. As of now, only nine percent of the total ratings (111,234) are positive. Many players have criticized the game’s approach of locking heroes and cosmetics behind a battle pass, as well as the cancellation of the highly anticipated PvE mode that was heavily promoted. Blizzard, perhaps unprepared for such a backlash, did not have a review system in place on Battle.net.

Despite its release of season 6, titled ‘Invasion,’ Overwatch 2 seems to have deviated from its initial purpose. The sequel was originally announced as having a permanent PvE game mode, allowing players to earn XP and level up their favorite heroes through story missions in an RPG-style format. However, in May, Blizzard announced that this mode was no longer in development and instead opted for intermittent releases of smaller co-op experiences. This decision has rendered the sequel somewhat pointless, and the addition of a battle pass and other live-service features at launch has not been well-received by loyal fans.

Additionally, it is worth noting that nearly two-thirds of the negative reviews are reportedly from Simplified Chinese players. Games analyst Daniel Ahmad revealed that Overwatch 2, along with World of Warcraft, were the most popular PC games in China until the regional servers were shut down due to a dispute between Blizzard and its Chinese distributor, NetEase. The longstanding partnership, which had lasted for 14 years, came to an end earlier this year because of new terms in the licensing agreement. This led Chinese gamers to resort to using VPNs to access these games. The absence of server announcements and the arrival of Overwatch 2 on Steam provided an opportunity for players to express their concerns and criticize the changes made to the game. The reliance on VPNs also resulted in slow logins and connection issues.

With these statistics in just three days, Overwatch 2 has surpassed the Chinese card-battle game War of the Three Kingdoms as the worst-reviewed game on the Steam platform. At the time of writing, Overwatch 2 has accumulated 101,826 negative reviews, earning it an ‘Overwhelmingly Negative’ tag. Blizzard plans to bring some of its other titles to Steam, which would be highly advantageous for PC players who dislike having to switch between multiple accounts and clients to access their favorite games. The specific titles that will make the transition are unknown, but it is hoped that the Diablo games will be among them.

Overwatch 2 is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
