Dr Neelam Suri, Senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi shares, “Ozempic (semaglutide) is a medication primarily used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and weight management. However, its use during pregnancy raises concerns and requires careful consideration due to potential risks. During pregnancy, the body undergoes various physiological changes, including alterations in glucose and insulin metabolism.”
Ozempic is classified as a Pregnancy Category C medication by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which recommends that Ozempic should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus.
“If a woman becomes pregnant while taking Ozempic, it is generally recommended to discontinue the medication and consult with a healthcare provider. Alternative treatment options, such as insulin or other approved medications for gestational diabetes, may be considered during pregnancy, based on the individual’s medical condition and risk factors,” Dr. Neelam Suri added.
How Is Ozempic Pregnancy Different From Normal Pregnancy?
Dr. Neelam Suri shares that in a normal pregnancy, the body goes through various physiological changes to support the growth and development of the fetus. However, when a woman is taking Ozempic (semaglutide) during pregnancy, there are potential differences and considerations.
Studies have suggested potential risks to the developing fetus, such as malformations, intrauterine death, and developmental delays. As a result, most healthcare professionals recommend discontinuing Ozempic during pregnancy.
The potential risks associated with Ozempic use during pregnancy may differ from those of a normal, uncomplicated pregnancy, where the focus is on monitoring the mother’s health and supporting the fetus’s growth and development without the influence of medications that have not been thoroughly evaluated for safety in pregnancy.
Symptoms Of Ozempic Pregnancy
Dr. Neelam Suri shares potential symptoms or concerns related to Ozempic use during pregnancy may include:
- An increased risk of fetal malformations,
- Intrauterine growth restriction, and
- Developmental delays in the fetus.
Women taking Ozempic during pregnancy may experience side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and constipation. These gastrointestinal side effects could potentially exacerbate the common discomforts experienced during pregnancy, such as morning sickness or digestive issues.

Are There Any Alternative Treatments For Managing Diabetes During Pregnancy That Should Be Considered Instead Of Ozempic?

Insulin therapy is generally considered the safest and most effective option for managing diabetes during pregnancy. Insulin has been extensively studied and used for decades in pregnant women with diabetes. It can be administered through injections or an insulin pump, and the dosage can be adjusted as needed to maintain appropriate blood sugar levels. Insulin does not cross the placenta, making it a safer choice for the developing fetus compared to oral medications that may have potential risks.
If insulin therapy is not suitable or well-tolerated, then we may recommend metformin. However, it’s important to note that the safety profiles of these medications during pregnancy are not as well-established as insulin, and close monitoring of both the mother and fetus is essential.
