Sylvester daCunha, the creator of Amul’s ‘Utterly Butterly’ campaign has passed away at the age of 80s.

Taking to Twitter, Jayen Mehta, I/C Managing Director, GCMMF, Amul, expressed his sorrow over the demise of Shri Sylvester daCunha, Chairman of daCunha Communications. Sylvester daCunha, a pioneer of the Indian advertising industry, had been associated with Amul since the 1960s. The Amul family joins in mourning this sad loss.

Sylvester daCunha, known as the doyen of Indian advertising, passed away on Tuesday evening. He was the creator of the iconic Amul Girl ‘utterly butterly’ campaign that was launched in 1966.

In his 80s, Sylvester daCunha is survived by his wife Nisha, their son Rahul daCunha who is also an advertising master, and his late brother Gerson daCunha, who was an advertising genius.

In 1966, Sylvester daCunha, along with his art director Eustace Fernandes, designed the beloved Amul Girl campaign. This campaign, which celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2016, captured the hearts of millions with its special sense of humor and mischievous portrayal of the high and mighty in India, including Indira Gandhi, Narendra Modi, Amitabh Bachchan, and many others.

Amul’s hoarding ad campaign featuring the Amul Girl is widely recognized as one of the longest-running advertising campaigns in the world. It has adorned the streets of Mumbai’s picturesque Chowpatty and has been featured in local newspapers.

Tributes poured in on social media for Sylvester daCunha, with Pavan Singh, Amul India GM Marketing, expressing sadness at his passing. Singh highlighted Sylvester’s contribution to Amul’s immortal and iconic topical campaign that started in 1966 and has successfully transitioned from OOH to print, TV, digital, and social media over the years.
