Payday 3 Closed Beta Impressions: Rounding Up the Old Gang for Stealthy Business

If movies like Heat and Sexy Beast have taught us anything, it’s that retirement is not a simple feat for professional heist criminals. The allure of one last job, the thrill of planning an elaborate robbery, and the greed that accompanies it, keep drawing them back in. Payday 3 takes us to the bustling streets of New York City, years after our reign of terror in Washington DC. This time, we navigate a present-day environment filled with mass surveillance gadgets, cryptocurrency, and the deep web. As someone who has had the opportunity to play the internal test and ongoing closed beta, I can confidently say that Payday 3 is shaping up to be a highly impressive sequel.

The current playtest version only features one location, the SCB Bank, which holds a significant amount of cash in its vault. This mission is reminiscent of the classic bank heists from Payday 2. As a player, you have the freedom to choose your approach, whether it’s a stealthy infiltration or an all-out assault. My experience with Payday 3 involved a combination of both, starting with stealthy lockpicking and eventually escalating into a chaotic battle against hordes of cops.

One noticeable improvement in Payday 3 is the increased freedom during stealth segments. Unlike in previous games, you can venture into private staff areas and even interact with guards without triggering alarms. This provides a more realistic depiction of how security would react in such situations. However, I did come across a peculiar feature that allowed me to close the shutters on the lobby windows without raising suspicion. While this may be an oversight by the developers, I hope it gets addressed before the game’s official launch.

During my gameplay, I spent a significant amount of time scouting the area and gathering important information. This involved tracking rooms, cameras, and pickpocketing keycards from guards. These keycards granted access to the main security control room, allowing me to disable the security system. The gameplay mechanics for these actions are streamlined, with most interactions tied to a single button press.

Once you put on your heist mask in Payday 3, you’re locked into a more nefarious mode. Equipped with guns, you can intimidate civilians, disable cameras, and eliminate security guards without any disruptions. Wearing masks restricts certain abilities like pistol-brandishing and climbing through windows, but it allows you to fully engage in the heist activities. It’s crucial to stay alert at all times, as any slip-up can quickly escalate the situation and draw unwanted attention.

Payday 3 offers nail-biting moments that can be eased by dividing tasks effectively among your team. There’s more flexibility in how you approach missions, whether it’s searching for clues to open the vault or sabotaging the power system. Playing through failed attempts is a core part of the game, as it allows you to learn from your mistakes and develop better strategies.

For new players, the early stages of Payday 3 can be overwhelming and loud. Without a complete understanding of the gameplay mechanics, it’s easy to draw unwanted attention and create chaos. However, as you gain experience and knowledge, the game becomes more rewarding and enjoyable.

The bank heist mission in Payday 3 involves breaching the vault from the floor above, using thermite to gradually break through the fortified wall. This aggressive approach triggers alarms and intensifies the chaos, with more cops pouring into the area. Managing the thermite levels and dealing with the consequences adds to the tension of the heist.

The combat in Payday 3 is a standout feature, with challenging enemies that pose a real threat. Careless moves, like failing to check corners or standing out in the open, can result in punishment. The intensity of the combat perfectly aligns with the seriousness of the crime you’re committing.

Engaging in street battles with bags of cash strapped to our shoulders evokes the chaotic energy of the iconic LA shootout scene in the movie Heat. The adrenaline rush of facing off against hordes of police, including snipers, adds to the overall excitement of the game.

Payday 3 is shaping up to be a highly immersive and thrilling gaming experience. With its improved mechanics, diverse gameplay options, and intense combat, it promises to be a worthy successor to the beloved Payday 2.
