Personal data of 45,000 New York City students compromised by Clop ransomware gang in MOVEit hack

The New York City Department of Education has joined the growing list of organizations affected by the widespread MOVEit file transfer software hack, revealing that private data has been stolen. In an email sent to parents, the agency disclosed that the personal information of around 45,000 students, including social security numbers and birth dates in some cases, has been compromised. The Department of Education also acknowledged that the personal information of its staff was accessed, but did not specify the number of teachers and personnel affected.

Ensuring the safety and security of our students and staff, including their personal information and data, is of utmost importance to the New York City Department of Education. We are fully committed to identifying the exact confidential information that has been exposed and assessing the impact on each individual affected. Once we have determined the scope of the breach, we will commence the process of notifying the individuals whose confidential information has been compromised. Moreover, we will provide them with access to an identity monitoring service as part of our response.

The Education Department is among the many organizations that have fallen victim to the MOVEit hack. Clop, a ransomware gang suspected to have pro-Russian ties, has claimed responsibility for this cyberattack, which occurred earlier in June. By exploiting a zero-day vulnerability in the enterprise file transfer software, the group managed to breach the servers of “hundreds of companies,” including the largest US pension fund. Although the scale of the New York City Department of Education breach is relatively small compared to other victims of this hack, it is distinctive due to the inclusion of personal information belonging to minors. During an interview with Bleeping Computer, the Clop gang declared their intentions to erase any data stolen from governments, the military, and children’s hospitals. However, it remains uncertain whether student data falls within this last category.
