PH bans Dutch poultry due to bird flu outbreak

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has implemented a temporary ban on the import of poultry products from the Netherlands due to an avian influenza outbreak.

In a memorandum order, the DA has prohibited the importation of Dutch wild birds and their products, including poultry meat, day-old chicks, eggs, and semen. This measure is being taken to prevent the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus from entering the local poultry population.

The processing, evaluation, and issuance of sanitary and phytosanitary import clearance have been suspended. However, shipments from the Netherlands that were in transit, loaded, or accepted by the port before the official communication of the ban will still be accepted, provided that the products were slaughtered or produced on or before July 9.

The temporary ban on poultry from the Netherlands comes after Dutch officials reported an outbreak of H5N1 subtype highly pathogenic avian influenza in Biddinghuizen, Dronten, to the World Organization for Animal Health on July 24.

The Netherlands is one of the suppliers of meat products to the Philippines. From January to June 2023, the country exported 31.3 million kilograms of meat to the Philippines, accounting for 5.3% of the total imported meat during that period. The exports included 29.9 million kilograms of pork and 1.4 million kilograms of beef, with no chicken being exported.
